About Us

Following a career in banking and finance that spanned over 30 years, founder and business owner Sharon Thomson decided to go ‘back to school’ to follow her passion for design and enthusiasm for all things gardening and retrain as a garden designer.

Sharon studied with the British Academy of Garden Design and was awarded the Post Graduate Diploma in Garden Design (with Distinction).

Creating a new outdoor space can sometimes be daunting and expensive but Avant Garden provide a design service that will suit any size of project and within any budget.

Working closely with clients to design the perfect outdoor space is of paramount importance to Sharon and her associates, whether it be establishing a sustainable garden, a haven for wildlife, a sanctuary to relax in, or just a redesign of a single flower bed, the Avant Garden team can help you to create an outdoor space that you will fall in love with.

Concept Design Service

Perfect for clients who have a clear idea of their aims and ambitions, and a fixed budget.

Initial consultation (in person or via zoom depending on location and personal preference).
In-depth discussion about your vision for your garden, budget, priorities and timescales.
Site survey to include approximate plot dimensions, soil analysis, orientation, and existing features to be retained, re-sited or removed.
Concept plan with mood boards and elevations.

Full Design Service

All the benefits of the Concept Design Service, but for those who have a need for a more comprehensive plan.

The full Concept Design Service plus:

Planting styles, colour charts and plant suggestions.
Design Proposal, master plan and design specifications, to include hardscaping materials, lighting plan and planting plan.
A suite of detailed plans for third-party contractors to work from.
Care and maintenance requirements.

Bespoke Planting Plan

Whether it is a complete overhaul or just to refresh and transform your existing outdoor space.

Initial consultation to discuss personal likes and dislikes, colours and styles.
Site analysis
Mood board and planting guide with bespoke planting plan with plant selections to provide structure, colour and year-round interest.

Plans & Costs

All Avant Garden designs are bespoke, individually tailored to your specific needs, therefore fees will vary, dependent on a number of key factors such as plot size, topography and design complexity.

We offer a video conferencing consultation to discuss your vision. A Face-to-Face consultation is available at a cost of £150, the cost of which will be deducted if you choose one of our packages*. Travel is included up to a distance of 30 miles from our base in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
